I'm fascinated by the first hymn, one that we often sing. The tune is known with the Christmas carol "O Come All Ye Faithful" or "Adeste Fidelis." I looked into it and have no insight into why these words are put with this music in our hymnal. I see no evidence that they have been used this way anywhere else, though they very well might have been.

I've always thought it is odd to have these particular words with this particular tune, but as we sang it last night something clicked for me. The words are for the faithful to the One who is always faithful, the God who always is with us, guides us, loves us, protects us, and will never let go of us.

Also, for the hymn to make the best sense it needs to be read as one statement from end to end. The words in the second and third verses are paraphrases of text found in the book of Isaiah.

How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word.
What more can He say than to you He hath said,
To you who to God for your refuge have fled:

Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed,
For I am thy God, I will still give thee aid;
I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
Upheld by My gracious, omnipotent hand;

When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie,
My grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply;
The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design
Thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine.

This is what our faithful God is all about, to those who are faithful to Him! We couldn't ask for better.

    Reading the Wednesday selections

    Here is an easy way to read the text that goes with the citations!
    In a separate browser window, open https://concordexpress.christianscience.com.
    For each citation on this page (e.g. Gen 1:1 or 275:6), copy from this page and paste into the concord express box with the magnifying glass symbol. (Don't use the box at the top with the header about searching JSH-Online.)
    Then click on the magnifying glass symbol, and the text will appear to the left, with the selection highlighted.
